Adopted by ORFU Clubs for 2012/13
At a meeting attended by 14 of the 15 Oxfordshire clubs operating a Mini Rugby Section, it was unanimously agreed to adopt the ‘New Rules of Play’ for all Oxfordshire clubs with effect of the start of the 2012/13 season. The one club unable to attend the meeting has subsequently confirmed their support for the change.
This will change the way in which rugby skills are introduced at the early stages of Mini rugby. In subsequent seasons, there will be changes to U10s, U11s and U12s. The aim is to make training and playing much more player-centric. The effect will be to make the progression to 15-a-side rugby (at Juniors) more staggered.
The main changes at U7s and U8s are to reduce from 7-a-side to 4-a-side (with no coaches) on smaller pitches. At U9s, contact is introduced, but scrums, line-outs, rucks and mauls are delayed. The effect in trails carried out in three counties has been a more flowing game and positive feedback from players who have more time carrying the ball and scoring more tries.
