19 state schools participated at Banbury RUFC.
The Oxfordshire RFU Year 7 Boys Festival was held on Wednesday 6th March, with 19 state schools participating at Banbury RUFC. Despite heavy rain on the day over 220 players took part, pooled so that schools from different districts faced each other in order to widen the competitive offer. Teachers were encouraged to referee the matches their schools were not involved in, with appropriately qualified volunteers and staff on hand to provide advice and support when required. The volunteers that helped have all been identified through Local Delivery Team involvement in their development journey as coaches, match officials and administrators.
Four of Oxfordshire’s CBRE All Schools; Cheney School, The Oxford Academy, Oxford Spires Academy and Wheatley Park School, participated. It was also great to see six schools linked to Targeted Work in our Focus Clubs competing. King Alfred’s School (Grove RFC), St Birinus School (Didcot RUFC), Faringdon Community College (Faringdon RUFC), The Bicester School (Bicester RUFC) and Gosford Hill and Marlborough School (Gosford All Blacks RFC) all enjoyed the matches they played.
The planning, organisation and delivery of this festival would not have been possible without great support from volunteers at Banbury RUFC and the Oxfordshire Society of Rugby Football Referees as well as representation from the Wasps Community Team. Schools that took part will be offered bespoke ticket packages for a Wasps home game as part of the link we have created with the local Gallagher Premiership club.
We would like to thank our team of volunteers for delivering the event; and RFU Community Rugby Coach Nick Todd for organising this fantastic opportunity.
