Position: Head Coach
Reporting to: Club Rugby Development Officer (RDO) – Vice-Chair Rugby
Outline
Stow-on-the-Wold and District RFC (SRFC) is looking to appoint a dynamic and energetic Head Coach to direct and lead, in conjunction with the assistant coaches and RDO, the current 1st and 2nd XV teams. The Head Coach will coach the teams twice a week, select the teams and be present on game day, with the aim of building a cohesive squad on and off the field, that: competes for selection; develops both individual and team skills; demonstrates excellence and improvement over the campaign; and, enhances the reputation of Club in all areas. The 1st XV currently play in the RFU Southern Counties North League (Level 7), while the 2nd XV play in the Berkshire, Buckingham and Oxon League (Level 12+). The Club has a thriving Mini and Youth section with 300 playing members, which also includes a Colts Team, who also compete in the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Leagues.
Qualification and Experience
Applicants will ideally be qualified to RFU Level 2 (or equivalent) and have current coaching experience within the preceding 3 years and be able to commit to the Club for at least two seasons. The applicant should view this role as a self-development opportunity that provides experience in coaching and player development and the Club will support the right candidate (even with lower qualifications) who is keen to improve their skills and attend appropriate coaching courses.
Key Areas and Accountability
The Head Coach will lead and develop a programme that addresses the following areas:
Leadership
•Demonstrate personal credibility, honesty, integrity, selflessness and an ability to handle pressure and stress appropriately
•Establish and direct a team vision, team values, standards and protocols in accordance with the goals of the Club
•Embrace these values through exemplary personal behaviour and by setting a good example
•Build and maintain a strong working relationship with the playing squad and team management, both individually and as a group, using a range of coaching and communication styles that are flexible to the individual and the Club goals
Squad Selection, Team Selection & Preparation
•In conjunction with the RDO, create a selection policy for both teams that is transparent, fair and consistent
•Identify all players in contention for selection for both the 1st and 2nd XV
•Monitor and assess the performance of all players, in consultation with assistant coaches and managers, and provide player assessment information during selection meetings
•Maintain discretion and confidentiality regarding squad and team selection, discussions with players about their performance and not making any promises or guarantees of selection to any player
•Ensure that only eligible and registered players are selected for senior teams
•In consultation with the RDO, identify on-field captains and leadership teams that may or may not include the Club Captain
Coaching Programme
•Prepare a comprehensive coaching programme for the playing squad, with input as necessary from the RDO and assistant coaches
•Provide the RDO with a clear statement of coaching philosophy, vision and goals for team including team profile, game plan and patterns of play. This may be updated as required
•Utilise all available technologies to analyse, understand and develop individuals
•Remain up to date with modern game development, including new laws and their impact on the game
•Develop personal coaching skills through regular CPD
•Provide technical and tactical coaching to individual players and mini-units across the playing squad
•Develop well-structured training sessions, that involve assistant coaches, allocating roles and responsibilities, and incentivise the playing squad to attend and enjoy their rugby
•Maintain strong links with the Colts Team to ensure consistency across the Club and provide a clear progression pathway
Discipline
•Demand and maintain clear team protocols and standards across the whole playing squad and team management, and deal effectively and appropriately with any breach or conflict
•Ensure that the squad maintains an appropriate standard of discipline both on and off the field, in the knowledge that they are all ambassadors of the Club
Player Development and Appraisal
•In conjunction with the RDO, develop a programme to record player performance and expectations
•Provide each player with regular feedback on performance and development goals
•Initiate and record Individual Performance Plans with all players at the end of the campaign
•Encourage personal development at all levels
Referees
•Maintain knowledge of and compliance with all law changes and competition rules
•Ensure that players have an understanding and respect for the laws of the game and interact appropriately with all officials, including the acceptance of referee decisions and constructive referee feedback
