What an Inspirational day it was.
Miles away from the Lions tour and Elite Rugby, Witney RFC held its own International Wooden Spoon Festival on Saturday 3rd June. Its focus was on Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Mixed Ability playing Tag Rugby.

Teams from across Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, all came together, to highlight how inclusive and fun, this game of rugby can be. Two age groups played, Under 15s and Over 15s, with disabilities ranging from Educational, Downs Syndrome, sensory and physical disabilities, a truly inclusive event with no boundaries, and full of enthusiasm from players, parents, coaches and volunteers. Rugby World Cup winning England International prop Phil Vickery MBE supported the day as the Ambassador for Wooden Spoon, chatting and being photographed with all.
The official welcoming and beginning of the event started just before lunch with a speech from Robert Courts, Conservative candidate for Witney. Matches began across five pitches, with no results being taken. Plenty of tries scored, and lots of skills on display, and all for fun. At the end of the festival, everyone went away with a medal and Phil Vickery presented all the teams with a trophy.
The event also saw the launch of a new super hero – Super Tag Duck, which was designed by Giorgio Cavazzano, who produces comics for Disney. He also designed the new Witney Wolves logo.
A huge well done and congratulations to the magnificent team of volunteers at Witney RFC that put the festival together. Many thanks also go to the team of referees (who's interpretation of the laws were spot on) and Wasps Community for their support.
