Success in first round of County Championship Plate.
All 6 of the Counties ladies teams were represented in the opening game of the Women’s County Championships. Those teams being Banbury, Grove, Henley, Witney, and the two Universities, Oxford University and Oxford Brookes. Over the last month or so, the ladies have gelled together in training to form a strong squad, and on Sunday 1st May they played their opening game, away to Eastern Counties at Stowmarket RFC. As expected, a few nerves and over eagerness kept the score in the first half to 17 – 0, to Oxon with Josie Murray scoring the opening try, after a turnover at a breakdown. Two more then followed by our Captain, Anne Wheeler.
The second half saw the ladies fire into the opposition, both in attack and defence. This saw 3 more tries scored in quick succession, before eastern Counties hit back with one of their own, through 7 phases after a scrum. Oxon re-gathered and hit back, running in a further 4 tries. Final Score 60-5 to Oxfordshire. Our thanks go to Eastern Counties, whose hospitality was exceptional throughout the day, and we wish them good luck in their remaining games. Our thanks also, to the match official for an enjoyable and well refereed match.
Sunday 8th May sees the Ladies travel to face Sussex.
Try Scorers: Anne Wheeler, Carly Dudding, Josie Murray, Nicolle Giuliani, Becky Gough and Fran Ronan.
