National Youth Council
Role Description & Person Specification
The RFU National Youth Council (NYC) is a group of 16 – 24 year olds from across the country, involved in all aspects of the game, working directly with the wider Rugby Football Union to highlight the views of young people.
The NYC will act as a consultative body for the RFU at a national level and will focus on the following key areas:
•Make recommendations to enable player and volunteer retention of participants aged 16 – 24 via research and project-based activities.
•To be a sounding board and youth insight group across the business.
•To be ambassadors for the sport and attend events and conferences in their role as a National Youth Council member.
National Youth Council member responsibilities:
•Provide support and insight to Sub Committees and other colleagues on engagement with, and retention and recruitment of 16 - 24 year old’s in rugby.
•Work alongside RFU staff on a number of “business challenges” in different areas of the NGB business and run projects to aid in a solution to the challenges.
•Collectively produce a presentation to report back the progressions made in the “business challenges” and display the effects had by the NYC to the RFU.
•Collate and produce an annual report, detailing the progress of the previous year and future objectives for the next 12 months.
•Act as an ambassador for the game at all times promoting the core values of the sport throughout the Community Game as an aid to participation and retention.

•Highly self-motivated and able to work under her / his own direction to achieve stated objectives within the necessary timescales.
•Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to engage on all levels.
•Good oral and written communication skills including report writing and delivering effective presentations.
•Ability to effectively plan and monitor work.
•Strong organisational skills and a keen attention to detail.
•Develops and maintains relationships with the ability to influence upwards and with peers.
•An effective team member with sufficient flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of roles.
•IT literate and competent in the use of Microsoft Office Applications.
•Ability to travel across England.
Training and Experience:
No previous training or specific qualifications is necessary but an enthusiasm for and commitment to developing the RFU and sporting participation is essential.

There will be opportunities to build your own links within the rugby industry, both within the NGB and within the national rugby volunteer network. A place on the NYC will give you the opportunity to help shape the game, both for young people and the wider rugby community. Working alongside fellow Youth Council members, you will set the work plan for the NYC. Throughout your term you will be expected to meet goals and deadlines set throughout the season, and you will be encouraged to identify opportunities for the National Youth Council to advise and support on. Subsequently, this may afford you opportunities to benefit your own development and personal interest.
Appropriate expenses for NYC related work will be reimbursed and there will be opportunities to develop skills and bolster your CV which may help support your future career.
Term of Office:
Two years with scope to extend for an extra year.
