Letter from Stuart Potts:
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Believe it or not this is summer! It might say so on the calendar but the warm dry weather although for some, is intermittent.
I want to remind, coaches, parents and players that during this summer period the RFU regulations are clear and that full on contact is NOT permitted, unless specifically permitted in the regulations. Alas some people view this period between May and September as an opportunity to engage in contact rugby for young people in more weather conducive conditions. Although some adult rugby is played during August as part of pre season training, the RFU regulations clearly state that Age Grade Rugby does not allow contact, unless specifically permitted in RFU Regulation 15.
Please understand we are NOT the “Fun Police”. We encourage children to play rugby, but we also believe that all children need a rest from contact rugby and therefore these regulations are put into place to make sure children are often protected from themselves when it comes to sport. As adults, coaches and parents we ask that you are vigilant in observing the regulations and that we as custodians of the game are ensuring the safety of children is of paramount importance.
I just need to remind you that Regulation 15.6.1 states that the 2012/13 season concluded on the 6th of May 2013 and the new season commences on Saturday 31st August 2013. Regulations 15.6.2 to 15.6.4 state that certain Pre-Approved Activity is permitted outside of the season and Regulation 15.6.5 sets out what activity is included in the definition of Pre-Approved Activity.
Please think about my concerns, but also understand we must make sure children have lots of fun during this “off season”.
Thank you
Stuart Potts
