We're aiming to tackle inactivity in colleges through our new funding programme.
Sport England recently announced an investment programme aimed at tackling inactivity in colleges. For more information please check out the Sport England website here.
In summary, Sport England is investing £5 million through the Tackling Inactivity in Colleges programme into projects that will support college students to be more active. The funding is available over two years, from Sept 2017 to Aug 2019. Colleges are invited to apply for £50,000 to £160,000 to fund projects. Projects are likely to include additional workforce in colleges as well as funding to deliver activities to tackle inactivity. Applications opened on 13 February 2017 and will close at 5pm on Monday 20 March 2017.
How can England Rugby support Tackling Inactivity in Colleges?
Rugby union is an activity that can be adapted to suit any participant including those from many under-represented groups. In particular, touch rugby is a mixed, non-contact form of rugby that is fun, flexible and friendly.
England Rugby invites colleges to become O2 Touch Centres in order to tackle inactivity. O2 Touch is student led and offers superb opportunities and unforgettable experiences for all students who get involved. O2 Touch College Centres receive:
*Annual funding for 3 years (worth £1500)
*Kit for student leaders and staff
*Portable music system and tailored playlists to create a fun atmosphere
*Full equipment and branding pack (online and offline)
*Dedicated central and local support
*Active club based O2 Touch Centres to link with and transition players during and after college
*Annual Twickenham experience day for student leaders and staff
*Bespoke app for tracking players and managing sessions
*Rewards and recognition system for players and leaders
In addition, England Rugby believes that the Core Values of rugby union, Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship, resonate with the values adopted by many colleges across the country. England Rugby can help colleges to use these values to engage students off the pitch as well as on it.
